Athens

Many of those who travel to Greece in order to visit Athens for its glorious past might be surprised by the metamorphosis of 70s architecture and the urban sprawl Athens has been experiencing in the most recent decades. Simialar to Rome in Italy, Athens was build on hills. Apart from the fact that there are eight hills in Athens and only seven hills in Rome. The city's eight hills are bounded on three sides by Mt Hymettos, Mt Parnitha and Mt Pendeli. The good things about Athens which makes it easy for sightseeing travellers is that most sights of interest are to be found at Syntagma Square (Plateia Syntagmatos), a relatively small area of the city. The Syntagma Square area is very lively and dominated by the Royal Square with hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, tourist and airline office to book cheap flights. Further districts worth while visiting are the Plaka to the south, Monastiraki to the west, Kolonaki to the east and Omonia to the north. The Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport is where most flights arrive and departure from and is situated 27 kilometres (17 miles) to the city centre near the Spáta suburb.
